tamil eelam
Tamil Eelam is a proposed independent state sought by the Tamil people in Sri Lanka in the northeastern part of the island. The name is derived from the ancient Tamil kingdom of Eelam, and the concept emanated in response to ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamils, escalating to a civil war in 1983, led by the militant group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). LTTE was defeated in 2009, but the concept of Tamil Eelam is still maintained by some Tamil groups. The demand for Tamil Eelam is based on issues surrounding political, cultural, and economic discrimination against Tamils by the Sri Lankan government.
