spotted salamander
A spotted salamander, scientifically known as Ambystoma maculatum, is a type of amphibian typically found in North America. It is characterized by its dark, usually black or bluish-black, body that is adorned with yellow or orangish-yellow spots. The spots usually run in two irregular rows down the back of the salamander. They are a part of the mole salamander family, meaning they spend most of their time burrowed underground. Spotted salamanders can grow to be about 15 to 25 cm long. They are known for their complex life cycle that includes an aquatic larval stage and a terrestrial adult stage. During the breeding season, they migrate to woodland pools to reproduce.
