Wikidata

  1. Scallie

The surname Scally is an anglicized version of the Gaelic "O Scolaidhe", which means "descendant of the scholar".[3] It was first found in County Westmeath. The variations of the name were formed when church officials spelled the names as they were pronounced, which caused many different spellings of the surname. After negative press coverage the term became a derogative and associated with hooliganism and crime. Although some people still use this term it's becoming less popular with the younger generations and less known as a derogative term. It seems to be now only popular within the older generation and areas within Liverpool.
