Wikidata

  1. Salary cap

In professional sports, a salary cap is an agreement or rule that places a limit on the amount of money that a sporting club can spend on player salaries. The limit exists as a per-player limit or a total limit for the team's roster, or both. Several sports leagues have implemented salary caps, both as a method of keeping overall costs down, and to ensure parity between teams so wealthy teams cannot entrench dominance by signing many more top players than their rivals. Salary caps can be a major issue in negotiations between league management and players' unions, and has been the focus point of several strikes by players and lockouts by owners and administrators.

Examples of salary cap in a Sentence

  1. Washington Mystics:

The new salary cap a year ago has forced teams to rethink their rosters long term, you used to be able to think in two- or three-year blocks. Now it's four- or five-year blocks. Teams will be in a situation where you may have four or five high-paid players and need four or five young contracts to balance that out.

  2. Joe Schoen:

We’re still working through that, but I’m open to everything, whether it’s trading player for player. I’ll listen to anybody if it’s trading a couple players, again, we’re in a situation where unfortunately we have to get under the salary cap and we’re not in very good salary cap health. Again, I’m not going to say yes to every deal, but I’m definitely going to listen and I’ll be open to the situations that are best for the New York Giants.
