Wikidata

  1. Protected

Protected is a 1975 documentary film, narrated by Don Brady and Sydney born producer Robert Hughes. The film was directed by Alessandro Cavadini. It was an exposé of the ill-treatment of Aboriginal workers by white men. The details of what life was like for Indigenous Australians on Palm Island became more widely known when Allessandro Cavadini and Carolyn Strachan recreated the strike in 1957 by hundreds of the Island’s residents even though there was huge resistance from local authorities. Some 22 years later in 2007, Aboriginal activist, and convicted Palm Island rioter Lex Wotton presented a screening of the film to the Film Fanatics society at Petersham Bowling Club. He recalled watching the film as a schoolboy and seeing his father on film. He said that screening opened his eyes to the way "things were different on Palm". He also said "There are numerous things that people haven't documented but this [film] was one thing that brought what was happening to the indigenous people to the attention of the wider community.

  1. Lee Rowland:

The fact that some other human makes a decision to violate the law does not make you a criminal, and the problem with that law is that it views every protestor with criminal suspicion, so while rioting is not protected, the problem with that bill is it took every protester and rounded them up to a rioter effectively if one person makes the choice to break the law.

  2. Polish Finance Minister Mateusz Szczurek:

(If Britain left the EU) my concern would be more about the broader EU politics and policy than the immediate economic impact, forgetting the natural conflict between EU net payers and receivers, there are things on which Britain and Poland have common cause, like making sure that the role of the non-members of the euro zone within the EU is protected.

  3. Justice Hugo L. Black:

The Press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of the government and inform the people. Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. And paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people.

  4. United States:

At the time following the Civil War, at its core, it meant all persons had the right to be protected by the police, that the laws of the country should protect all people, in the 20th century, more broader questions were litigated under the 14th Amendment, like Brown v. Board of Education -- whether segregation was constitutional. Cases involving the internment of Japanese citizens, case from the marriage equality decisions, even Roe vs. Wade have strains of equal protection language and invoke due process law.

  5. Evan Greer:

We feel strongly that policies that impact people's basic civil liberties and people's rights in the digital age should never be tacked on to legislation like an infrastructure bill, if we had our way, we would remove this entirely from the infrastructure bill so we could have a real debate over what types of policies are needed to ensure that vulnerable and low-income folks are protected from things like crypto scams and to make sure billionaires and big companies pay their taxes.
