  1. pinocytosisnoun

process by which certain cells can engulf and incorporate droplets of fluid

Wiktionary

  1. pinocytosisnoun

A form of endocytosis in which material enters a cell through its membrane and is incorporated in vesicles for digestion

Wikipedia

  1. Pinocytosis

In cellular biology, pinocytosis, otherwise known as fluid endocytosis and bulk-phase pinocytosis, is a mode of endocytosis in which small molecules dissolved in extracellular fluid are brought into the cell through an invagination of the cell membrane, resulting in their containment within a small vesicle inside the cell. These pinocytotic vesicles then typically fuse with early endosomes to hydrolyze (break down) the particles.Pinocytosis is variably subdivided into categories depending on the molecular mechanism and the fate of the internalized molecules.

Wikidata

  1. Pinocytosis

In cellular biology, pinocytosis is a form of endocytosis in which small particles are brought into the cell, forming an invagination, and then suspended within small vesicles that subsequently fuse with lysosomes to hydrolyze, or to break down, the particles. This process requires a lot of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate, the chemical compound mostly used as energy in the majority of cells. Pinocytosis is used primarily for the absorption of extracellular fluids, and, in contrast to phagocytosis, generates very small amounts of ATP from the wastes of alternative substances such as lipids. Unlike receptor-mediated endocytosis, pinocytosis is nonspecific in the substances that it transports. The cell takes in surrounding fluids, including all solutes present. Pinocytosis also works as phagocytosis, the only difference being that phagocytosis is specific in the substances it transports. Phagocytosis engulfs whole particles, which are later broken down by enzymes, such as cathepsins, and absorbed into the cells. Pinocytosis, on the other hand, is when the cell engulfs already-dissolved or broken-down food.

U.S. National Library of Medicine

  1. Pinocytosis

The engulfing of liquids by cells by a process of invagination and closure of the cell membrane to form fluid-filled vacuoles.
