osteopetrosis
Osteopetrosis is a rare inherited genetic disorder characterized by increased bone density due to the inability of the body to break down and reabsorb bone. The excessive bone disrupts the creation of normal marrow space which can lead to a variety of health issues such as bone fragility, impaired skeletal growth, hematological complications, cranial nerve compression and other issues. This condition is also known as 'marble bone disease' because the bones can appear marble-like on X-rays.
Wikidata
Osteopetrosis
Osteopetrosis, literally "stone bone", also known as marble bone disease and Albers-Schonberg disease is an extremely rare inherited disorder whereby the bones harden, becoming denser, in contrast to more prevalent conditions like osteoporosis, in which the bones become less dense and more brittle, or osteomalacia, in which the bones soften. Osteopetrosis can cause bones to dissolve and break. It can cause osteosclerosis. The cause of the disease is understood to be malfunctioning osteoclasts.
