The phrase "Mother Machree" has also become a substitute for a more vulgar exclamation, e.g., such as the invocation of "Jesus Christ!" (in a moment of sudden displeasure or exasperation) or like the phrase that Catholic nuns tend to use when they get ticked off, "Jesus, Mary and Joseph!"
