Wikipedia

  1. Monty Python

Monty Python (also collectively known as the Pythons) were a British comedy troupe formed in 1969 and consisting of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. The group came to prominence for creating and performing the sketch comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969–1974). Their work then evolved from the series into a larger and more influential collection that included live shows, films, albums, books, and musicals; their influence on comedy has been compared to the Beatles' influence on music. Regarded as an enduring icon of 1970s pop culture, their sketch show has been referred to as being "an important moment in the evolution of television comedy".Broadcast by the BBC, Monty Python's Flying Circus was loosely structured as a sketch show, but its innovative stream-of-consciousness approach and Gilliam's animation skills pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content. A self-contained comedy team responsible for both writing and performing their work, the Pythons had creative control which allowed them to experiment with form and content, discarding rules of television comedy. They followed their television work by making films, most notably Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983). While their influence on British comedy was apparent for many years, they also gradually began inspiring the work of cult American performers, from the early editions of Saturday Night Live through to absurdist trends in television comedy. The adjective "Pythonesque" has entered English as a result. At the 41st British Academy Film Awards in 1988, Monty Python received the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema. In 1998, they were awarded the AFI Star Award by the American Film Institute. Much dialogue from their TV series and films is well-known and widely quoted, and both Holy Grail and Life of Brian are frequently ranked on lists of the greatest comedy films. In a 2005 poll which asked more than 300 English-speaking comedians, comedy writers, producers, and directors to name the greatest comedians of all time, half of Monty Python's members made the top 50 (Cleese at No. 2, Idle at No. 21, and Palin at No. 30).

  1. Monty Python

Monty Python were a British surreal comedy group that created Monty Python's Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, spawning touring stage shows, films, numerous albums, several books and a stage musical as well as launching the members to individual stardom. The group's influence on comedy has been compared to The Beatles' influence on music. The television series, broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974, was conceived, written and performed by members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Loosely structured as a sketch show, but with an innovative stream-of-consciousness approach, it pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content. A self-contained comedy team responsible for both writing and performing their work, the Pythons' creative control allowed them to experiment with form and content, discarding rules of television comedy. Their influence on British comedy has been apparent for years, while in North America it has coloured the work of cult performers from the early editions of Saturday Night Live through to more recent absurdist trends in television comedy. "Pythonesque" has entered the English lexicon as a result.

  2. Robert Hewison:

Many businessmen fail to understand Python principles--the ultimate absurdity was an offer from America to buy the 'format' of the Python shows, that is, Monty Python without the Pythons--corporate methods do not have the conceptual framework to deal with an anarchist collective, run by intelligent and arrogant comedians who have proved that their method works.
