a radioactive transuranic element synthesized by bombarding einsteinium with alpha particles (Md is the current symbol for mendelevium but Mv was formerly the symbol)

GCIDE

  1. mendeleviumadjective

an unstable radioactive element discovered in 1955 and produced artificially only in very small quantities; symbol Md (also Mv). It is a transuranic element with atomic number 101. Isotopes 255, 256, 257, and 258 have been prepared. Md258, the longest-lived, has a half-life of two months. HCP61

Wiktionary

  1. mendeleviumnoun

A transuranic chemical element (symbol Md, formerly Mv) with atomic number 101.

  2. Etymology: Named after the scientist Dmitri Mendeleev, who is the creator of the periodic table. The same name was proposed, but rejected, for the earlier-discovered elements berkelium and erbium.

Wikipedia

  1. Mendelevium

Mendelevium is a synthetic element with the symbol Md (formerly Mv) and atomic number 101. A metallic radioactive transuranium element in the actinide series, it is the first element by atomic number that currently cannot be produced in macroscopic quantities by neutron bombardment of lighter elements. It is the third-to-last actinide and the ninth transuranic element. It can only be produced in particle accelerators by bombarding lighter elements with charged particles. Seventeen isotopes are known; the most stable is 258Md with half-life 51 days; however, the shorter-lived 256Md (half-life 1.17 hours) is most commonly used in chemistry because it can be produced on a larger scale. Mendelevium was discovered by bombarding einsteinium with alpha particles in 1955, the method still used to produce it today. It was named after Dmitri Mendeleev, father of the periodic table of the chemical elements. Using available microgram quantities of einsteinium-253, over a million mendelevium atoms may be made each hour. The chemistry of mendelevium is typical for the late actinides, with a preponderance of the +3 oxidation state but also an accessible +2 oxidation state. All known isotopes of mendelevium have short half-lives; there are currently no uses for it outside basic scientific research, and only small amounts are produced.

  1. mendelevium

Mendelevium is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Md and atomic number 101. This radioactive metal is part of the actinide series and it is usually produced by bombarding einsteinium with alpha particles. It was first synthesized in 1955 by a team of American scientists at the University of California, Berkeley and was named in honor of Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, a key contributor to the development of the periodic table. Mendelevium has no natural occurrence on Earth and has no known stable isotopes. Its most stable isotope, Mendelevium-258, has a half-life of approximately 51 days.

  1. Mendelevium

Mendelevium is a synthetic element with the symbol Md and the atomic number 101. A metallic radioactive transuranic element in the actinide series, mendelevium is usually synthesized by bombarding einsteinium with alpha particles. It was named after Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, who created the Periodic Table. Mendeleev's periodic system is the fundamental way to classify all the chemical elements. The name "mendelevium" was accepted by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in 1955 with symbol "Mv", which was changed to "Md" in the next IUPAC General Assembly.
