Kurup is a surname used among the Nairs of Kerala. Nair is a Kshatriya clan. Nairs were soldiers, landlords and administrators in the kingdoms of Travancore, Kochi and Zamorins. Kurup and Panicker are titles bestowed on Nair chieftains who were responsible for maintaining Kalaris and were exponents in Kalaripayattu - a martial art. They used to command a high status among the Nair aristocracy.
