  1. Hodza

In Zimbabwean Shona culture, hodza, meant illness, sickness or referred to a kid who was born frail.. Figuratively a 'hodza' was someone who was unlikely to live to adulthood and sire children... Hodza is also a family name, largely traced to a forebearer who got the name as a nickname, largely because he exhibited many of the attributes outlined above. The name stuck and was passed on to his paternal line of descendants. starting with the sons. Hodza's full name, which was later formerly adopted and registered was Hodza Munjeri, his father's name was Svosve or interchangeably Svesve, meaning 'the ant'. Svesve's father was Hunidzarira whose father, was in turn called Makuvamombe. Makuvamombe had chiefly heritage and his name literally translates 'one who accumulates or amasses cattle'. It might also refer to some kind of 'usurper', in the sense of accumulating spoils of war. In terms of lineage, Hodza was a member of the Mbizi (zebra) totem or clan and his sub-clan Mazvimbakupa, which literally means those who 'yearn or crave to give'. This implies those of the Mazvimbakupa sub-clan are excessively generous people. The Mazvimbakupas trace their origins to Chihota, which denotes both a 'place or location' and a 'chieftainship'. In the sense of space or location, Chihota is an area in the present-day Zimbawean district of Marondera, in Mashonaland East. While Hodza traces his ancestry to Chihota, the majority of his descendants now call the Mutumba area, in Madziwa communal area, within the Shamva district of Mashonaland Central their ancestral home. Mutumba is approximately 250 kilometres from Chihota, in a north-easterly direction. There is oral tradition passed through the generations to explain the migration from Chihota to Mutumba in Madziwa. Among the reasons advanced are: 1) Displacement following succession rifts or conflict and/or war over the throne to the Chihota chieftainship. 2) Search of more fertile agricultural land and pasture, which is quite credible as some of the lands occupied in Mutumba would pass as an upgrade on the ones deserted. 3) Related to the factor immediately above, need to move to new areas in response to booming population and pressure on resources, including food self-sufficiency.
