A sandwich made on a (usually soft) long Italian roll.
I am going to Wawa to get a hoagie for lunch.
Origin: Common term in the Philadelphia area. Reportedly derived from a term for Italian immigrants who worked at the Hog Island ship yards (Hoggies) in the Delaware River during World War I, who packed such sandwiches for lunch. It was basically an antipasto on a roll.
