    Heather is another word for hinder as used by English and Welsh hedgelayers. After laying the stems and inserting stakes at regular intervals hethers made of long slim branches of willow or hazel are woven in between the stakes to create a securely bound properly laid hedge resistant to windblow and weight of animals.

    The hethers were made from 12 foot lengths of hazel.
