gestational age
Gestational age is a measure of the age of a pregnancy which is taken from the woman's last menstrual period to the current date. It is measured in weeks and days and is used to assess the progress and development of the pregnancy. This measurement is typically higher by approximately 2 weeks than the actual number of weeks since conception (also known as fetal age).

Gestational age
Gestational age relates to the age of an embryo or fetus. There is some ambiguity as to how it is defined: ⁕In embryology, the term "gestational age" is seldom used because it lacks precision. The timing of embryonic development starts with fertilization. In mammals, this proceeds through uterine implantation, until birth. ⁕In human obstetrics, gestational age is often defined as the time elapsed since 14 days prior to fertilization. This is approximately the duration since the woman's last menstrual period began. There is also a further distinction between the calendar gestational age described here, and the developmental gestational age determined by comparing an embryo or fetus to the average age of others that were at the same stage of development. Unless the exact date of fertilization is known, counting from LMP has been the common method of computing gestational age. It involves the assumption that fertilization in humans typically occurs a consistent period from the onset of the LMP. Although this "LMP method" of calculating gestational age is convenient, other methods are in use or have been proposed.

In the past decade, there have been some obstetrical interventions, as well as physician education, resulting in a decline in births at preterm or early term gestations, indeed, what we found is that the decline in perinatal mortality was largely attributable to changes in the gestational age distribution.
Obesity during pregnancy is associated with children being born large for gestational age and these children are more at risk for childhood obesity and diabetes later in life, women who are planning pregnancy should aim for a healthy weight prior to conception.
Especially in low - and middle-income countries with really high preterm birth rates and huge neonatal mortality rates, one of the biggest problems is, there is no ultrasound, and women are not empowered to keep track of their last menstrual cycle. It's often taboo to keep track of or talk about your period, that is one of the biggest problems we have worldwide, and lots of folks have been working on trying to find another way -- ideally an inexpensive test -- to figure out what the gestational age is for any given pregnancy.
