The transfer of water from the surface of the earth to the atmosphere by evaporation, sublimation and transpiration

  2. Etymology: evaporation + transpiration

Wikipedia

  1. Evapotranspiration

Evapotranspiration (ET) is the combined processes by which water moves from the earth’s surface into the atmosphere. It covers both water evaporation (movement of water to the air directly from soil, canopies, and water bodies) and transpiration (movement of water from the soil, through roots and bodies of vegetation, on leaves and then into the air). Evapotranspiration is an important part of the local water cycle and climate, and measurement of it plays a key role in agricultural irrigation and water resource management.

Wikidata

  1. Evapotranspiration

Evapotranspiration is the sum of evaporation and plant transpiration from the Earth's land surface to atmosphere. Evaporation accounts for the movement of water to the air from sources such as the soil, canopy interception, and waterbodies. Transpiration accounts for the movement of water within a plant and the subsequent loss of water as vapor through stomata in its leaves. Evapotranspiration is an important part of the water cycle. An element that contributes to evapotranspiration can be called an evapotranspirator. Potential evapotranspiration is a representation of the environmental demand for evapotranspiration and represents the evapotranspiration rate of a short green crop, completely shading the ground, of uniform height and with adequate water status in the soil profile. It is a reflection of the energy available to evaporate water, and of the wind available to transport the water vapour from the ground up into the lower atmosphere. Actual evapotranspiration is said to equal potential evapotranspiration when there is ample water.

Building Site meeting today where ground conditions are wet and unsuitable for disposal of rainwater or sewage waste water from septic tank. Soakpits will not work. Evapotranspiration is the solution but GOOGLE was not very helpful.
The site slopes gently away from the building and is grassed and occasionally maintained (cut)
Instruction was given to the contractor to provide subsoil drains along level contour comprising 300mm wide trench in ground 400mm deep with 110mm sllotted pipe encased in crushed stone and wrapped in shade-cloth. The trench then covered over to ground level and grassed.
Water will then be dispersed into the vegetated top layers and will substantially evaporate.
This solution is not suitable for hollows or areas that may become swampy.
