    Dexmethylphenidate, sold under the brand name Focalin among others, is a strong central nervous system (CNS) stimulant medication used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in those over the age of five years. It is taken by mouth. The immediate release formulation lasts up to five hours while the extended release formulation lasts up to twelve hours. It is the more active enantiomer of methylphenidate.Common side effects include abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and fever. Serious side effects may include abuse, psychosis, sudden cardiac death, mania, anaphylaxis, seizures, and dangerously prolonged erection. Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is unclear. Dexmethylphenidate is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. How it works in ADHD is unclear.Dexmethylphenidate was approved for medical use in the United States in 2001. It is available as a generic medication. In 2020, it was the 130th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 4 million prescriptions.

    Dexmethylphenidate, otherwise known as d-threo-methylphenidate, is the dextrorotatory enantiomer of methylphenidate. It is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor and releasing agent and thus a psychostimulant, which affects the CNS. Dexmethylphenidate is sold as Focalin by Novartis, as Attenade by Celgene and as a generic drug by Teva. Height and weight may be reduced by stimulant therapy; for most young people effects on growth is not a major concern; nevertheless regular monitoring of height and weight by healthcare providers has been recommended. On occasion, a treatment emergent psychosis can occur during long-term therapy with dexmethylphenidate; regular psychiatric monitoring of people who are taking dexmethylphenidate for adverse effects such as psychotic symptomatology has been recommended.
