Crane fly
Crane fly is a common name referring to any member of the insect family Tipulidae. Cylindrotominae, Limoniinae, and Pediciinae have been ranked as subfamilies of Tipulidae by most authors, though occasionally elevated to family rank. In the most recent classifications, only Pediciidae is now ranked as a separate family, due to considerations of paraphyly. In colloquial speech, crane flies are sometimes known as "mosquito hawks", "skeeter-eater", or "daddy longlegs", (a term also used to describe opiliones (harvestmen) and members of the spider family Pholcidae, both of which are arachnids). The larvae of crane flies are known commonly as leatherjackets.Crown group crane flies have existed since at least the Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous and are found worldwide, though individual species usually have limited ranges. They are most diverse in the tropics but are also common in northern latitudes and high elevations.Tipulidae is one of the largest groups of flies, including over 15,000 species and subspecies in 525 genera and subgenera. Most crane flies were described by the entomologist Charles Paul Alexander, a fly specialist, in over 1000 research publications.

crane fly
A crane fly is a type of flying insect characterized by long, slender bodies and stilt-like legs, often mistaken for giant mosquitoes. They belong to the family Tipulidae within the insect order Diptera, also known as true flies. Crane flies, which are generally harmless to humans and do not bite or sting, are found worldwide and exist in various habitats. Their larvae, known as "leatherjackets", live in the soil and can cause damage to plants by feeding on roots.

Crane fly
A crane fly is an insect in the family Tipulidae. Adults are very slender, long-legged flies that may vary in length from 2–60 mm though tropical species may exceed 100 mm. Up until recently, all of the members of the families Cylindrotomidae, Limoniidae, and Pediciidae were included within Tipulidae; they all share the same common names, and similar biology and morphology. Crane flies are commonly mistaken as "giant mosquitoes". In the United Kingdom, Ireland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia they are commonly referred to as daddy longlegs or dandy longlegs, but this name can also refer to two unrelated arthropods: members of the arachnid order Opiliones and the cellar spider Pholcidae. The larva of the European crane fly is commonly known as a leatherjacket. These larvae can cause damage to lawns by feeding on the roots of grass plants. Numerous other common names have been applied to the crane fly, many of them more or less regional, including mosquito hawk, mosquito eater, gallinipper, may fly gollywhomper and whapper. At least 4,250 species of crane flies have been described, most of them by the specialist Charles Paul Alexander, though he described many more that are now in families other than Tipulidae.
