    Coprosma robusta, commonly known as karamu, is a flowering plant in the family Rubiaceae that is endemic to New Zealand. It can survive in many climates, but is most commonly found in coastal areas, lowland forests, or shrublands. Karamu can grow to be around 6 meters (20 feet) tall, and grow leaves up to 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) long. Karamu is used for a variety of purposes in human culture. The fruit that karamu produces can be eaten, and the shoots of karamu are sometimes used for medical purposes.

    Coprosma robusta, or more commonly known as karamu in Māori, is the name given to the shrub/tree that is one of 45 Coprosma species found in New Zealand. Coprosmas are identified by the domatia, their stipules, small flowers and colourful berries. C. robusta is found in lowland forest or shrub throughout New Zealand and almost to the south of the South Island. It has dark green leaves approximately 5-13cm long and 3-4 cm wide. The tree itself is either a shrub or small tree that can grow up to 6m tall. The stipules have a single, shiny black gland at the tips. When berries are present, they are orange, 8-9mm long and can take up to a year to ripen.
