Wikidata

  1. Compactification

In mathematics, in general topology, compactification is the process or result of making a topological space into a compact space. A compact space is one in which any infinite sequence of points in the space ends up getting arbitrarily close to at least one point in the space. Intuitively, an infinite sequence can fail to have such a "limit" point if either the limit point is not in the space, as could be the case with an open set, or if the space is large enough to accommodate some infinite sequences while still maintaining some minimum finite distance between all pairs from the sequences, as with the sequences of integers on the real line. The methods of compactification are various, but each is a way of controlling points from "going off to infinity" by in some way adding "points at infinity" or preventing such an "escape".
