  1. colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that uses a flexible tube with a small light and camera attached to it, called a colonoscope, to examine the full length of the interior of the colon and rectum. It is often used to detect abnormalities or changes, such as polyps or cancer, in the large intestine and rectum. This procedure also allows for the collection of tissue samples for further analysis and the removal of any abnormal growths if necessary.

Wikidata

  1. Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy or coloscopy is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. It can provide a visual diagnosis and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected colorectal cancer lesions. Colonoscopy can remove polyps as small as one millimetre or less. Once polyps are removed, they can be studied with the aid of a microscope to determine if they are precancerous or not. It takes 15 years or fewer for a polyp to turn cancerous. Colonoscopy is similar to sigmoidoscopy—the difference being related to which parts of the colon each can examine. A colonoscopy allows an examination of the entire colon. A sigmoidoscopy allows an examination of the distal portion of the colon, which may be sufficient because benefits to cancer survival of colonoscopy have been limited to the detection of lesions in the distal portion of the colon. The American Cancer Society "Guidelines for the Early Detection of Cancer" recommend, beginning at age 50, both men and women follow one of these testing schedules for screening to find colon polyps and cancer: 1. Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, or 2. Colonoscopy every 10 years, or 3. Double-contrast barium enema every 5 years, or 4. CT colonography every 5 years.

Examples of colonoscopy in a Sentence

  1. Samir Gupta:

Our suspicion is that patients selecting colonoscopy often do so because they value its high sensitivity for polyps and cancer, and don’t mind the invasiveness and inconvenience, and that patients selecting stool blood tests often do so because the test is more convenient.

  2. Zuri Murrell:

You are your own best advocate, what happened with Gena, having her family history, even though she didn’t have symptoms, she persisted and persisted to get her colonoscopy.

  3. Robert Bresalier:

There’s good evidence that screening colonoscopy in asymptomatic individuals at 10-year intervals is effective and cost effective. And I think I’m not ready to change. I would not be ready to change practice in terms of extending the interval based on the study, but it is comforting and provides additional data to strengthen the concept of adhering to these guidelines, the overall message from this study is we can feel comfortable with the current guidelines.

  4. Douglas Owens:

The main thing is to get screened. It doesn’t matter if you use a stool test or you get a colonoscopy, pick one. Pick whichever one suits your preferences, but do it.

  5. Robert Smith:

New data also show very clearly that a substantial fraction of adults are not willing to undergo colonoscopy and thus recommendations to get a colonoscopy in this group will go unheeded, the data also show that many of these adults will accept stool testing, and thus achieving high rates of colorectal cancer screening in the practice setting requires providing at least the option for colonoscopy or, ideally, a high sensitivity FIT.
