  1. CITES

CITES (shorter name for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, also known as the Washington Convention) is a multilateral treaty to protect endangered plants and animals from the threats of international trade. It was drafted as a result of a resolution adopted in 1963 at a meeting of members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The convention was opened for signature in 1973 and CITES entered into force on 1 July 1975. Its aim is to ensure that international trade (import/export) in specimens of animals and plants included under CITES, does not threaten the survival of the species in the wild. This is achieved via a system of permits and certificates. CITES affords varying degrees of protection to more than 38,000 species. As of April 2022, Secretary-General of CITES is Ivonne Higuero.

Examples of cites in a Sentence

What Giuliani is, I think, trying to say is that not everything that Mueller might ask about is a fact. 2. Judge William H. Orrick:

If there was doubt about the scope of the order, the President and Attorney General have erased it with their public comments, the President has called it 'a weapon' to use against jurisdictions that disagree with his preferred policies of immigration enforcement, and his press secretary has reiterated that the President intends to ensure that 'counties and other institutions that remain sanctuary cites don't get federal government funding in compliance with the executive order.'.

  3. Tom Colbert:

We have no doubt it’s from Cooper and the reason is that he cites he left no fingerprints on the plane, the reason that’s critical is because it’s absolutely true.

  4. Denzel McCampbell:

At a time where report after report cites the city of Detroit's harmful treatment of Black Lives Matter protesters –and the enormous waste of taxpayer money to lose embarrassingly in court after trying to intimidate them, the city's use of discriminatory facial recognition technology, and the fact that people still do not feel safe despite spending $300 million per year on police –it's disappointing and unproductive for Chief Craig to run to the cameras to call for Congresswoman Tlaib's resignation, one would think Chief Craig has more important things to do.

  5. Tom Milliken:

The world is watching especially those destination countries whose demand drives the trade — Viet Nam and China. There is an urgent need to implement the full provisions of the measures agreed by CITES Parties and to close those cross-border markets in Viet Nam that service Chinese consumers, failure to do so means the future outlook for Africa’s rhinos remains very bleak.
