acanthus. The name of a plant.
The leaves are like those of the thistle; the flowers labiated; the under lip of the flower is divided into three segments, which, in the beginning, is curled up in the form of a tube; in the place of the under lip are produced the stamina, which support the pointals; the cup of the flowers is composed of prickly leaves, the upper part of which is bent over, like an arch, and supplies the defect of the upper lip of the flower; the fruit is of an oval form, divided in the middle into two cells, each containing one smooth seed. The species are,
1. The smooth-leaved garden bear’s-breech.
2. The prickly bear’s-breech.
3. The middle bear’s-breech, with short spines, &c. The first is used in medicine, and is supposed to be the mollis acanthus of Virgil . The leaves of this plant are cut upon the capitals of the Corinthian pillars, and were formerly in great esteem with the Romans. They are easily propagated by paring the roots in February or March, or by the seeds sown at the same time. Philip Miller.
