Wikipedia

  1. Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve, according to the creation myth of the Abrahamic religions, were the first man and woman. They are central to the belief that humanity is in essence a single family, with everyone descended from a single pair of original ancestors. They also provide the basis for the doctrines of the fall of man and original sin that are important beliefs in Christianity, although not held in Judaism or Islam. In the Book of Genesis of the Hebrew Bible, chapters one through five, there are two creation narratives with two distinct perspectives. In the first, Adam and Eve are not named. Instead, God created humankind in God's image and instructed them to multiply and to be stewards over everything else that God had made. In the second narrative, God fashions Adam from dust and places him in the Garden of Eden. Adam is told that he can eat freely of all the trees in the garden, except for a tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Subsequently, Eve is created from one of Adam's ribs to be his companion. They are innocent and unembarrassed about their nakedness. However, a serpent convinces Eve to eat fruit from the forbidden tree, and she gives some of the fruit to Adam. These acts not only give them additional knowledge, but it gives them the ability to conjure negative and destructive concepts such as shame and evil. God later curses the serpent and the ground. God prophetically tells the woman and the man what will be the consequences of their sin of disobeying God. Then he banishes them from the Garden of Eden. Neither Adam nor Eve is mentioned elsewhere in the Hebrew scriptures apart from a single listing of Adam in a genealogy in 1 Chronicles 1:1, suggesting that although their story came to be prefixed to the Jewish story, it has little in common with it. The myth underwent extensive elaboration in later Abrahamic traditions, and it has been extensively analyzed by modern biblical scholars. Interpretations and beliefs regarding Adam and Eve and the story revolving around them vary across religions and sects; for example, the Islamic version of the story holds that Adam and Eve were equally responsible for their sins of hubris, instead of Eve being the first one to be unfaithful. The story of Adam and Eve is often depicted in art, and it has had an important influence in literature and poetry.

Adam and Eve, according to the Abrahamic religions, were the first man and woman. These religions teach that all humans are descended from Adam and Eve. In the Book of Genesis, chapters one through five, there are two creation narratives with two distinct perspectives on woman. In the first, Adam and Eve were created together in God's image and jointly given instructions to multiply and to be stewards over everything else that God had made. In the far more detailed second narrative, God fashions Adam from dust and places him in the Garden of Eden where he is to have dominion over the plants and animals. God places a tree in the garden which he prohibits Adam from eating. Eve is later created to be Adam's companion. However, "the serpent" tricks Eve into eating from it. God curses only the serpent and the ground. He prophetically tells the woman and the man what will be the consequences of their sin of disobeying God. Then he banishes the man from the Garden of Eden. Interpretations and beliefs regarding Adam and Eve and the story revolving around them vary across religions and sects.

Examples of adam and eve in a Sentence

  1. Joshua Swamidass:

But now, clearing up some big scientificunderstandings, we know that all four of these things can be true at the same time, even if Adam and Eve lived as recently as just 6,000 years ago, they would be the genealogical ancestors of everyoneacross the globe by AD 1. They could even have been created de novo, from the dust and a rib. Of course, atthe same time, we would also descend from people outside the Garden, otherswhom God created by a providentially governed process of evolution.

  2. Dale Bumpers:

The The House managers have said shame and embarrassment is no excuse for lying. Well, the question about lying, that's your decision. But I can tell you, you put yourself in President Clinton position, and you've already had this big moral lapse, as to what you would do. We are -- none of us are perfect. Sure, you say, President Clinton should have thought of all that beforehand. And indeed President Clinton should. Just as Adam and Eve should have. Just as you and you and you and you, and millions of other people who have been caught in similar circumstances should have thought of it before. And I say none of us are perfect.

  3. Nathan Lents:

I would not say that there is any evidence, historical or scientific,in favorof the existence of Adam and Eve, as they are presented in the Bible, however, there have been developments in our understanding of ancestry and genetics that allow for the possibility of universal ancestors of the entire human population in the surprisingly recent past.

  4. Joshua Swamidass:

Most readers of Genesis understood Adam and Eve to be (1) ancestors of us all, and (2) miraculously created without parents of their own, in contrast, evolution teaches that (3) we share common ancestors with apes, and (4) we arise from a large population, not a single couple. This conflict of fact onlyseemed solvable by revising foundational Christian theological beliefs, or by rejecting evolution.

  5. Mark Twain:

Adam and Eve had many advantages, but the principle one was that they escaped teething.
