The Lorelei ( (listen) LORR-ə-ly; German: [loːʁəˈlaɪ, ˈloːʁəlaɪ]) (also spelled Lorelei, Loreleï, Lore Lay, Lore-Ley, Lurley, Lurelei and Lurlei throughout history) is a 132-metre-high (433 ft), steep slate rock on the right bank of the River Rhine in the Rhine Gorge (or Middle Rhine) at Sankt Goarshausen in Germany, part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 1930s Loreley Amphitheatre is on top of the rock. It has been an infamous maritime disaster site since its first records during the 10th century, with various myths ranging from dwarfs to lastly a siren trying to explain the high number of ship wrecks and the loud echo inside the passage.

A Lorelei is a term originated from German folklore. It typically refers to a mythical creature similar to a siren or mermaid, known to bewitch boatmen and lure them to their death with her enchanting music or singing. The term is also used for a rock on the Rhine river in Germany where this creature was said to reside, which is notorious for causing boat accidents due to its strong currents. Alternatively, it is also used as a female name in some cultures.
Wikidata
Lorelei
The Lorelei is a rock on the eastern bank of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, Germany, which soars some 120 metres above the waterline. It marks the narrowest part of the river between Switzerland and the North Sea, and is the most famous feature of the Rhine Gorge, a 65 km section of the river between Koblenz and Bingen that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in June 2002. A very strong current and rocks below the waterline have caused many boat accidents there. Lorelei is also the name of a feminine water spirit, similar to mermaids or Rhine maidens, associated with this rock in popular folklore and in works of music, art and literature.
