We've seen a pattern in this country, an unfortunate pattern. When law enforcement alone are the only persons with access to critical evidence, like this kind of video, the process is to minimize the conduct, to keep it out of the eyes of the public and to protect the police officers, however, when this video is made public, typically by camera footage or cell phone footage like in the case of George Floyd... that public pressure turns out to be very effective in moving elected officials to hold police officers accountable, so that's what we're looking forward to in this case.

  3. Superintendent Lydon:

Recognizing that the murder of George Floyd was likely to create particularly acute racialized trauma, I felt I had an immediate duty to protect and support employees who may have been traumatized and may have heightened ongoing trauma by having to deal with Derek Chauvin, out of care and concern, and without the comfort of time, I made the decision to limit exposure to employees of color to a murder suspect who could potentially aggravate those feelings.

  4. Keith Ellison:

I am pleased Thomas Lane has accepted responsibility for Thomas Lane role in Floyd's death, thomas Lane acknowledgment Thomas Lane did something wrong is an important step toward healing the wounds of the George Floyd family, our community, and the nation. While accountability is not justice, this is a significant moment in this case and a necessary resolution on our continued journey to justice.

  5. The New York Times:

While Democrats seized on Mr. Floyd’s death last May to highlight racism in policing and other forms of social injustice, Republicans responded to a summer of protests by proposing a raft of punitive new measures governing the right to lawfully assemble, some, like [Florida Gov. Ron] DeSantis, are labeling them ‘anti-riot’ bills, conflating the right to peaceful protest with the rioting and looting that sometimes resulted from such protests.
