Wikipedia
Antarctic
The Antarctic ( or , American English also or ; commonly ) is a polar region around Earth's South Pole, opposite the Arctic region around the North Pole. The Antarctic comprises the continent of Antarctica, the Kerguelen Plateau and other island territories located on the Antarctic Plate or south of the Antarctic Convergence. The Antarctic region includes the ice shelves, waters, and all the island territories in the Southern Ocean situated south of the Antarctic Convergence, a zone approximately 32 to 48 km (20 to 30 mi) wide varying in latitude seasonally. The region covers some 20 percent of the Southern Hemisphere, of which 5.5 percent (14 million km2) is the surface area of the Antarctica continent itself. All of the land and ice shelves south of 60°S latitude are administered under the Antarctic Treaty System. Biogeographically, the Antarctic realm is one of eight biogeographic realms of Earth's land surface.

There is an urgent need to understand the contribution of Antarctic ice to sea-level rise, and we use a number of techniques to determine the balance between snowfall and ice loss, when ice loss is not replenished by snowfall, then sea level rises.
Growth of Antarctic sea ice over the past few decades had been a relief, because it offset some of the rapid losses in the Arctic, now that sea ice is retreating in both hemispheres we should be concerned about our planet's temperature because it means less of the sun's heat is reflected back into space.
Emperor penguins are the most iconic species of the ice. They are uniquely adapted to the harsh and extreme Antarctic environment, yet they are also increasingly vulnerable to climate change, habitat loss and human disturbance.
Gentoo penguins are big climate change winners in the Antarctic, they are perfectly happy to take advantage of a warming Antarctic. They don’t mind that it’s getting wetter.
