This was a needle-in-a-haystack search with no guarantee that the needle exists, finding a change that could be clearly confirmed as real was absolutely a surprise. We were pretty certain that Venus is volcanically active, but we didn’t know if eruptions occur every few months, years, once every 10,000 years, or longer. All options could have fit with existing data. Unless we got incredibly lucky, we now know the frequency is every few months or so, similar to the family of Earth’s big basaltic intraplate volcanoes like Hawaii, the Galapagos Islands, Canary Islands, etc.

We need better data on what’s actually beneath these volcanoes, continuous monitoring systems would allow us to have a better estimation of when an eruption might occur. With these systems, we would likely know about an eruption a few days before it happens, and people would be able to evacuate and stay safe.

The way these features look is very different than any volcanoes across the solar system, either icy examples or rocky volcanoes, they formed as mountains, but there is no caldera at the top, and they have large bumps all over them.

Each one of these eruptions would have had a significant climate impact — maybe the released gas made the atmosphere thicker or blocked the sun and made the atmosphere colder, modelers of the Martian climate will have some work to do to try to understand the impact of the volcanoes.

It is astounding how little we know about Venus, but the combined results of these missions will tell us about the planet from the clouds in its sky through the volcanoes on its surface all the way down to its very core, it will be as if we have rediscovered the planet.

Lava flows are ideal recorders of the magnetic field. They have a lot of iron-bearing minerals, and when they cool, they lock in the direction of the field, but it's a spotty record. No volcanoes are erupting continuously. So we're relying on careful field work to identify the right records.

It was a watershed event in volcanology in a lot of ways, it was when geologists after the eruption worldwide started recognizing these giant debris avalanches, these giant landslides that are now recognized as a major hazard at volcanoes all around the world. Drones, remote instruments like theUSGSspider, creepmeters, strainmeters andtiltmeters help scientists better monitor volcanoes in the hopes history doesn't repeat itself.

In Japan we have some volcanoes, earthquakes and such kind of natural hazards. People (want to create) some monitoring or analysis equipment but we don't know ... what kind of factor to use, so we need to know the natural system more clearly or precisely ... we have to observe the earth more precisely.

The New Horizons mission has taken what we thought we knew about Pluto and turned it upside down, the New Horizons mission's why we explore -- to satisfy our innate curiosity and answer deeper questions about how we got here and what lies beyond the next horizon. Geologists on the New Horizons team combined images of Pluto’s surface to make 3-D maps that indicate two of Pluto’s most distinctive mountains could be ice volcanoes. In its statement September NASA explained that the ‘ cryovolcanoes ’ may even have been active in the recent past. The two candidates are large features on the dwarf planet’s surface measuring tens of miles across and several miles high. Related : September NASA releases first Pluto flyby images.
