[T]his gave us the opportunity to assess what they were actually doing, what kind of capabilities existed on the balloon, what kind of transmission capabilities existed, and I think you’ll see in the future that that time frame was well worth its value to collect over.

There was a potential opportunity for us to collect intel where we had gaps on prior balloons, and so I would defer to the intel community. But this gave us the opportunity to assess what they were actually doing, what kind of capabilities existed on the balloon, what kind of transmission capabilities existed, and I think you’ll see in the future that that timeframe was well worth its value to collect over.

There’s a strong interest in thinking about respiratory diseases in a more holistic way, transmission is the same. And there are certain types of measures that are good protection against all respiratory diseases. So that could really help people understand that when we are in high circulation for respiratory diseases, there are steps that you can take – just in general.

Such gaps include the failure to identify the original host reservoir, the failure to identify a candidate intermediate host species and the lack of serological or epidemiological evidence showing transmission from animals to humans, among others outlined in this report. As a result of these evidentiary gaps, it is hard to treat the natural zoonotic spillover theory as the presumptive origin of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our healthcare workers were heroes in 2020, but they became zeroes in 2021, i do not agree that the current science says that the vaccines prevent transmission. I think we know that it affects people with compromised immunities and different types of vulnerable groups – those I believe we need to concentrate and protect, but I don't believe there was any compassion in October of 2021 when healthcare workers and first responders were fired because they wouldn't get the vaccine just before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I don't think we have enough information at this point to completely classify it. I think there's some suggestions, but there's more study that needs to be done, there are other infections -- for example, syphilis -- that spread through other ways other than sexual transmission.

Otherwise, people often fall out of care, or because hepatitis C can remain asymptomatic for years, people forget or are unaware of their diagnosis, and what ends up happening is, they don't get linked to the treatment that they need, and then they show up much later in the health system with advanced disease and complications that are much harder and much more costly to treat. In addition, we've lost years of opportunity to prevent transmission.

If it's a hug that doesn't necessarily include a shirt, there's a theoretical risk of transmission there, but that's not what we're hearing in terms of what's happening with our cases, so it's lower risk. I can't say zero risk.

Now, I realize it sounds like I just said that a once-in-a-generation event happened twice in short succession, and pandemics are indeed rare, but once all the conditions are in place -- that is a zoonotic virus capable of both human infection and human transmission that is in close proximity to humans -- the barriers to spillover have been lowered such that multiple introductions, we believe, should actually be expected, i was quite convinced of the lab leak Kristian Andersen, until we dove into this very carefully and looked at it much closer.

Whether they'll be able to confer complete sterilizing immunity, that's a very tall order, but we should be now working on ways to slow down person-to-person transmission, because this virus continues to mutate and then fools our immune system and gets past that mucosal layer.Get CNN Healths weekly newsletter Sign up here to get The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.

This is an emerging disease. It has been emerging for the last 20 to 30 years,( so) it's not unknown, it's very well described, the risk for the general public, therefore, appears to be low, because we know that the main modes of transmission have been as described in the past.

I think it's important for us to realize that in some ways, we are already in the midst of a surge, there are indicators that the amount of transmission happening in this country right now, while not the same as it was this past winter, is at the levels that we were seeing during the Delta wave... But what we're not seeing are the same rise in hospitalizations and deaths -- so, we're seeing a small uptick but not the same tremendous rise that we've seen with some of these previous waves.
