It’s unsurprising that NEA leadership is demonizing parents and concerned citizens who've expressed their concerns about the state of America's schools – after all, over the past two years it’s become abundantly clear that union leaders' primary objective is to maintain their iron grip on power –student achievement and welfare be damned, learning loss has disproportionately impacted disadvantaged students, and mental health of students and parents alike have suffered. Yet when individuals try to raise these points, they are smeared as ‘radical’ and ‘extremist’ in an attempt to shame, silence, and marginalize families.

The C.D.C. has been clear that everyone can unmask outside unless they’re in close contact with each other, and I believe that schools should be doing this for recess. And I believe we need to give parents and teachers a road map to what it takes to start undoing the mitigations. It was clear that vaccines for teachers helped us reopen schools. Maybe it’s vaccines for kids helping us get to unmasking of teachers and kids in schools.

We know that the safest place for kids to be is in-person learning in Chicago Public Schools, and we’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars to make Chicago Public Schools safe. They are safe. We’ve got the data to demonstrate that. We’ve got to get the teacher’s union to get real and get serious about getting back into in-person learning.
