We were so fortunate to have Bernie host Reliable Sources from its launch and during all those years. We learned so much from him as he was a walking, talking history professor of journalism in the second half of the 21st century, as he said at the start of every program, ‘welcome to Reliable Sources where we turn a critical lens on the media.’ And he meant it. On the program, Bernie was passionate about holding journalists and news organizations accountable. Bernie was a real pro, a gentleman to all the young staff and he never failed to look just right in his striped dress shirts and orange ties. Our sympathies to his wife, his daughters and his brother Marvin and whole Kalb family.

I have heard and seen surveys that suggest when some news consumers see the word ‘anonymous’ attached to information, they are assuming that the journalist doesn’t actually know who provided the information – which is not true at all, i think that journalists could do a lot more to educate the public about how they handle leaked information so that the public might have a little more faith in the journalistic process.

I think this is the first big war in the digital age that has galvanized Americans' attention, and there's a quantum leap in the toys and tools journalists are using since the last big American war in 2003 in Iraq, but all of this sophisticated technology still relies on the basic journalistic values of accuracy, verification, and fairness. Journalists still gather news piece by piece, often through dogged shoe leather reporting, interviewing witnesses, sifting through information, questioning, it, testing it, authenticating it — and then summarizing, synthesizing and analyzing it all in a clear and concise way to keep the public informed.
