I was personally frustrated at WHOs apparent great fear in moving from classifying from epidemic to pandemic, all the more so given all the evidence we had gathered from Chinas experience, historically, a great strength of the WHO was its expertise in consensus building. Here, we neededleadership, not merely consensus building. It is hard for some organizations to act.

Its been frustrated to see other countries -- like South Korea-- have widespread testing and their doctors wearing what looks like spacesuits to treat patients, he said. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising doctors dealing with a shortage of facemasks to use a bandana or scarf to care for COVID-19 patients as a last resort. Health care professionals without masks in contact with a COVID-19 patient are advised to stay away from work for 14 days, setting up a scenario for many more doctors and nurses to be absent from the frontlines. What frustrated me a lot and made me feel really sad and sick was that I thought that the Haitian people and the Haitians who were in charge of the country would have taken [the earthquake] as an opportunity to make the country better, but it has not happened. My leaders have become more selfish, they have been robbing more. So instead of taking the opportunity to change the country, they've made it worse.

As a percentage of homicides, these mass killings are also accounting for more deaths. He believes its partially a byproduct of an angry and frustrated time that we are living in. Densley also said crime tends to go in waves with the 1970s and 1980s seeing a number of serial killers, the 1990s marked by school shootings and child abductions and the early 2000s dominated by concerns over terrorism. This seems to be the age of mass shootings, Densley said. EL PASO SHOOTING LEAVES 20 DEAD, 26 INJURED He and James Alan Fox, a criminologist and professor at Northeastern University, also expressed worries about the contagion effect, the focus on mass killings fueling other mass killings. These are still rare events. Clearly the risk is low but the fear is high, Fox said. What fuels contagion is fear. The mass shootings this year include the three in August in Texasand Daytonthat stirred fresh urgency, especially among Democratic presidential candidates, to restrict access to firearms. While the large death tolls attracted much of the attention, the killings inflicted a mental and physical toll on dozens of others. The database does not have a complete count of victims who were wounded, but among the three mass shootings in August alone, more than 65 people were injured. DAYTON, OHIO, SHOOTING THAT LEFT 9 DEAD, 27 HURT HALTED IN UNDER A MINUTE BY COPS WHO SHOT SUSPECT: MAYOR Daniel Munoz, 28, of Odessa, was caught in the crossfire ofthe shooting that took place between a 10-mile stretch in West Texas. He was on his way to meet a friend at a bar when he saw a gunman and the barrel of a firearm. Instinctively, he got down just as his car was sprayed with bullets. Munoz, who moved to Texas about a year ago to work in the oil industry, said he had actually been on edge since the Walmart shooting, which took place just 28 days earlier and about 300 miles (480 kilometers) away, worried that a shooting could happen anywhere at any time. He remembers calling his motherafter the El Paso shootingto encourage her to have a firearm at home or with her in case she needed to defend herself. He would say the same to friends, telling them before they went to a Walmart to bring a firearm in case they needed to protect themselves or others during an attack. [ Taylor ] was frustrated when I was frustrated, Selena Gomez was sad when I was sad, but more than anything, my friends stood by my side. When I think they visibly saw me in so much pain, they didn't want it for me, but they -- sorry -- they never stopped loving me, and I played Selena Gomez the song and I played it with Selena Gomez mom and dad and I showed her the video and her mom and Taylor started crying, and it wasn't because the song was emotional, it was just because the first thing they said to me was' We're so happy that you're here.' After seeing all of that, this is such a cool moment, and that's a huge thing for me.

Funneling anger is risky business. Anger is a powerful fuel, and one could argue that much social change has resulted in no small part because of angry voices. In my half century of living, however, I have seen too many activists become frustrated and worn out—made callous by failed attempts to make change, with their idealistic passion devolving into seething anger, or worse, thick hatred.
