Although formerly enslaved Americans paid for this statue, the design and sculpting process was done without their input or participation, and it shows, the statue fails to depict how enslaved African Americans pressed for their own emancipation. At the time, they had only recently been liberated from slavery and were grateful for any recognition of their freedom. However, in his keynote address at the unveiling of the statue, Frederick Douglass pointedly did not praise the statue, and, indeed, in private remarks, went as far as to say, it ‘showed the Negro on his knee when a more manly attitude would have been indicative of freedom.’.

If we teach a generation of young people that, after the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation and all of the events of the 1860s, attempts to integrate free people failed and there were repressive laws enacted that weren't repealed for almost a century, then we're going to have different conversations, we're going to have historical context for why the country is the way it is, instead of thinking that the fact that Black people are at the bottom of every metric is indicative of our deficit or our inferiority.

Because Hugh Hefner and Hugh Hefner Playboy, for better or for worse, shaped Both Theodore and Garcia ideas of what sexual liberation, emancipation and freedom looks like for the women of Both Theodore and Garcia generation, and Both Theodore and Garcia never examined that or thought critically about Hugh Hefner Playboy, and the more I did this series, the more I talked to these women, the more I realized they had become trapped inside this idea of liberation that Hugh Hefner had constructed.

They weren't like Joe Manchin. They didn't give a damn if was bipartisan or not, they just said,' We are in control, we are the party of the Union, we are the party of emancipation, the Democrats are the party of treason, they are the party of secession... of racism, and we don't care... if they vote for it or not.' It just reinforced their feeling that the Democrats were out of touch and didn't respect the results of the Civil War.

Juneteenth should be commemorated as the expression of the realization of the end of slavery in the United States - and I commend those who worked for its passage, i could not vote for this bill, however, because the holiday should not be called 'Juneteenth National Independence Day' but rather, ‘Juneteenth National Emancipation [or Freedom or otherwise] Day.’.

In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt, we support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.

Even when slavery was abolished, it was incremental -- it began with the Emancipation Proclamation, and led up to the 13th Amendment, same thing with civil rights. We didn't just have one huge sweeping bill that changed everything. First we focused on public transportation, then voting rights, then fair housing. There were incremental steps.

While I reserve judgement on the man arrested for this crime until proven guilty, the fact that black churches were burned to the ground is a reminder of the fear and pain so many communities have repeatedly experienced since emancipation, this trauma resides deep within all of us, black and white, in America.

The museums are here to teach the history of art and something more as well, for, if they stimulate in the weak a desire to imitate, they furnish the strong with the means of their emancipation.

While bills are being brought into the House of Commons to regulate every thing, from the sweeps crying "sweep," to "emancipation, vote by ballot, and free trade," is there no county member whose "time and talents'' are devoted to "domestic policy," who will bring in a bill "for the better regulation of the marriage ceremony," and put the canonical hours later in the day ? at all events, could there not be a special clause in favour of London ? A spring morning there is the very reverse of Thomson's description ; for "delicious mildness" read "a cutting east wind;" and for "veiled in roses" substitute "smoke and fog." The streets are given up to the necessities of life — to the milkman with his cans, the butcher with his tray, the baker with his basket ; all belong to the material portion of existence. Now, marriage is (or ought to be) an affair of affections, sentiments, &c. The legislature ought to give it the full benefit of moonlight and wax-candles.

The thing which I found so interesting right after the Arab Spring happened was just that sort of discovery -- who are we? we are people who are the cousins, the neighbors, dealing with religion, and this is the slow way in which emancipation is happening, also for Hedi in the film.

Ah, I fancy it is just the same with most of what you call your emancipation. You have read yourself into a number of new ideas and opinions. You have got a sort of smattering of recent discoveries in various fields -- discoveries that seem to overthrow certain principles which have hitherto been held impregnable and unassailable. But all this has only been a matter of intellect, Miss West -- superficial acquisition. It has not passed into your blood.

Without country you have neither name, token, voice, nor rights, no admission as brothers into the fellowship of the Peoples. You are the bastards of Humanity. Soldiers without a banner, Israelites among the nations, you will find neither faith nor protection; none will be sureties for you. Do not beguile yourselves with the hope of emancipation from unjust social conditions if you do not first conquer a Country for yourselves.

Modern life means democracy, democracy means freeing intelligence for independent effectivenessthe emancipation of mind as an individual organ to do its own work. We naturally associate democracy, to be sure, with freedom of action, but freedom of action without freed capacity of thought behind it is only chaos.
