We hope that an eclipse close to solar maximum will not only show us an awe-inspiring corona, but also some big, interesting sunspots on the face of the Sun to help us learn about living inside the atmosphere of an active star and the space weather it creates.

Annular eclipses are similar to total eclipses in that the moon, Earth and sun are aligned so that the moon moves directly in front of the Sun as viewed from Earth, but a total eclipse does not happen, that is the moon does not completely block out the visible disk of the sun because the moon is farther away and so its apparent size in the sky is [ slightly ] smaller than the sun. This means that a tiny ring of annulus of the solar disk is visible around the moon.

There is a little less than one total lunar eclipse per year on average, a lunar eclipse can only happen during a full moon, when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun. But the moon's orbit is tilted a little bit compared to the Earth's, so usually when the moon is full, the Earth's shadow passes a little bit above or a little bit below it. This is why we don't have a lunar eclipse every month.

Space telescopes can't take us this close to the sun, the eclipse provides an opportunity for scientists to gather observations very close to the sun in white light, infrared, other wavelengths. This is the region that sets the boundary conditions for how the corona is heated, how is the solar wind accelerated -- conditions we call space weather. We are continuously still learning about this environment.

Instead of being able to collect data from one spot or for just a few minutes, this eclipse is providing that window of opportunity to observe the corona over a long period of time, this is also an opportunity to test out novel instruments and our models also to see how well are they working. And it's scientifically important because of this sun, moon and Earth connection.

Jung said. In Wyoming where it’s dry and in the peak of fire season, Anna Wilcox said campfires will be banned. People should be aware that leaving a car on the side of the road or throwing a cigarette butt out a window could start a fire, Anna Wilcox added. Anna Wilcox also said people could need to adjust to Casper’s high elevation and should keep an eye out for altitude sickness symptoms. Places like Casper and Hopkinsville may not have chosen to be in the path of totality, but they are still looking forward to showing off their communities and experiencing a total eclipse. There’s no reason why we ca n’t all have fun doing it together, the big thing here for us... is that when that moment of totality comes, that we can all experience it together.
