Everybody always sort of focuses in on the big stuff — big birds and mammals and things like that. But this is an insect world. … We’re just living on it, it is really important to have that sort of appreciation. And one of the nice things about insects is that there is so much diversity for you to appreciate, just in your backyard.

We have 124 miles of ice before we reach the coast. Throughout this area, we have beautiful wildlife, colonies of birds breeding right here – so we are not totally alone. It is always exciting to come here because I’m passionate about birds. When I have the chance, I go to the nunatak and observe the birds that are breeding there, or I’ll rest on Sunday. It all depends on the weather.

This technology, which works in chickens…. it would be amazing to get this to work in lots of different birds across the bird tree of life because that will be hugely impactful for avian conservation, if we find that there’s something that provides immunity against a disease that’s hurting a population, and you know what the genetic changes underlying that immunity or that ability to fight off that disease is — maybe we can use these tools to transfer that even between closely related species.

All owls do regurgitate small little pellets just of indigestible material because, unlike us, where (when) we eat a piece of meat we eat around the bone, birds of prey just eat the whole thing, for the small little bones they can’t digest, they just cough it back up.

When we go back and resurvey places [in Joshua Tree] that the early scientists at UC Berkeley visited a century ago, we find about half as many birds, and that's because it's warmed and dried so much, what we're seeing is a whole kind of change in a community; a collapse in the case of birds. For park managers, there's limits of what they can actually do to reverse this because of the climate change effects.

What I think( the model) may imply is that there are a lot of factors involved in how birds are responding, even to something like moving their nesting dates forward, we need to do a better job of understanding what factors may be important.

The day began simply enough, cigarette in hand, coffee, black and bitter, wadded up newspaper, and after I got out of bed You were there too, and you wanted to debate the meaning of existence, but I couldn’t at that moment Outside, the birds sang to each other, words of wisdom, clouds of the finest smoke, a mob of blue jays descended on the bird feeder, the light still peachy If there are lessons to be Learned and gauntlets run, If you remain holy, The seed will be taken right from your hand.

One of the first things that jumps out to me from these findings is that we can already see that climate change is having a disproportionate effect on species that have less capacity to deal with environmental change through their behavior, this doesn't mean that climate change is not affecting brainy birds... or that brainy birds are going to do just fine. What our findings suggest is that climate change can have a much stronger effect on the less-brainy birds.

Unlike those big windmills that destroy everybody's property values, kill all the birds, one day, the environmentalists are going to tell us what's going on with that. And then all of a sudden, it stops. The wind and the televisions go off. And your wives and husbands say :' Darling, I want to watch Donald Trump on television tonight. But the wind stopped blowing and I can't watch. There's no electricity in the house, darling.'.

Chimpanzees eat insects but we did not know that they catch and use them to treat their wounds, hence, they not only have an understanding of their food species( plants, insects, monkeys, birds, reptiles) but probably also about characteristics of other animal species that help to act against injuries.
