Counting sheep no longer works. The day comes crashing down on you and you can’t escape it. You go home, have two shots of Jack, look through the bills, fix yourself a TV dinner, watch the Lakers lose another one, take a bath, think briefly of cutting your wrists knowing you don't have the guts to do it, and you go to bed. So much for the sheep.

This was a bill that was one of many targeting the LGBTQ community in Montana. This legislature has systematically attacked that community. We have seen bills targeting our art forms, our books, our history and our health care, and I rose up in defense of my community that day, speaking to harms that these bills bring and that I have first-hand experience knowing about. I have friends that have taken their lives because of these bills.

And I rose up in defense of my community that day, speaking to harms that these bills bring and that I have first-hand experience knowing about. I have friends that have taken their lives because of these bills. when I rose up and said there is blood on your hands, I was not being hyperbolic. I was speaking to the real consequences of the votes that we as legislators take in this body.

[These bills] rely on this sort of paranoid idea that teachers are secretly encouraging your kids to identify as trans, and then not telling you about it, it’s fundamentally important that all young people feel they can build trust with the people that they spend most of their day with, which are their teachers.

Discriminatory policies affect more than just grades: LGBTQ+ students who experience discrimination, like being prohibited from using the restroom, report higher levels of depression and lower self-esteem. The government, on average, makes millions of payments each day, and our systems are built to pay all of our bills on time and not to pick and choose which bills to pay, it would be an exceptionally risky, untested and radical departure from normal payment practices of agencies across the federal government.

It’s bipartisan – that never happens around here on big bills, or rarely I should say. It would be a good start by Norfolk Southern to tell us today, in addition to what more they’re going to do for the people of Ohio and Pennsylvania, tell us today that they support the bill. That would help. If a major rail company said, ‘we support these reforms and will help you pass this bill,’ That’s what I think the people of both states deserve, we have a lot of work to do in the near term, but the future has to be about passing the Railway Safety Act.

It’s better to start enacting these reforms and start having less mass shootings than it is to sit in silence and do nothing, we’ve had bills like this introduced before in Michigan and sometimes they don’t get much traction, they don’t go very far, or they die in committee. Bills are always better when they’ve gone through committee first, look, we’ve got a five-seat majority. When we had a 27-seat majority, we had challenges. But you can’t just throw something on the floor. That’s why the committee will be a better process.
