Why is that a matter of concern? Because it opens up opportunities for these viruses and other germs to be reintroduced into the United States, and to cause outbreaks of disease. The recently concluded measles outbreak in Ohio is an example, the introduction of the poliovirus into New York is an example, and we need to keep our guard up.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses that we’ve identified, and if one person has measles and there’s somebody unvaccinated around them, there’s a 90% chance they’re going to get it, it really just takes one unvaccinated person to travel into a community, and they can have a measles outbreak if there isn’t a high enough vaccination rate in that community.

If you give Moderna or Pfizer information early enough, they can make a vaccine really quickly, which we couldn’t do at the beginning of the pandemic, the big lesson learned is that you can think about all of these variants of viruses circulating around the world, and it’s kind of like anything else we would have a radar system for, to detect what is out there so you can get an early warning.

But we do think that being attacked by two viruses, particularly if you are less than five years of age, it’s been clearly demonstrated by this study, it does tend to make your illness more severe, more likely to be prolonged in the hospital, more likely to be in the pediatric intensive care unit, and so clearly, having your lungs and your throat and your body – generally your immune system – attacked by two viruses simultaneously, understandably might make some young children more severely ill.

It’s certainly something we’re gonna watch really carefully. We’re just going to have to keep an eye on all the data, see what viruses are circulating and who’s getting sick, and what sort of impact that’s having.

To me, what’s really a concern is the ongoing infections and whether they’re producing more variants in China that might be of particular concern for us, and testing people before they get on a plane won’t answer that question, what we really need is to do a much better job of sequencing the viruses from individuals who are traveling from China so that we can aid in terms of understanding what kinds of variants are circulating there.

SARS-CoV-2 so far has been evolving about twice as fast as influenza H3N2, about four times as fast as influenza H1N1, and about 10 times as fast as B/Victoria, this means that if you look here at Omicron-like viruses, in just two years' time, since the start of the pandemic, we've accomplished about five years of equivalent evolution.
