The' Army Man' jokes got me my initial interview with Sam Simon and Matt Groening [ Groening ], which led to my first script assignment,' Bart the General,' but I wasn't actually hired to work on staff until I'd done three episodes. ' The Simpsons' didn't have enough money for a full-time writing staff until late in 1989. They've got enough now, of course.

I was speaking at my son's school, I was talking to the Indian kids there because I wanted to get their input, a 17-year-old...he's never even seen 'The Simpsons' but knows what Apu means. It's practically a slur at this point. All he knows is that is how his people are thought of and represented to many people in this country.

There's something subversive about 'The Simpsons,' but there's a lot of love in the spirit of the show, 'Family Guy' has more shock value to it and that works for Hulu because that's Disney's service for edgier content.

I really want to see Indian, South Asian writer, writers in the room, not in a token way but genuinely informing whatever new direction Hank Azaria may take, including how it is voiced or not voiced, i'm perfectly willing and happy to step aside or help transition it into something new. I really hope that's what' The Simpsons' does and it not only makes sense, but it just feels like the right thing to do to me.

In the event that a costume complaint arises, a company has a tremendous opportunity to make it better quickly … or far worse, say a white person dressed as the convenience store clerk from ‘ The Simpsons ’ and was speaking in an Indian accent all day. A fellow coworker goes to HR and says she feels uncomfortable. If that person is quickly dismissed... that employee is likely to feel even angrier and who knows what could happen.

I am tickled we are getting all this attention, but I don't think it's going to trigger this well-awaited re-evaluation of my episode that I was hoping for, the Simpsons has always kind of embraced the over the top side of American culture ... and (Trump) is just the fulfillment of that.

Sam Simon brought a level of honesty to the characters, is it too bizarre to say Sam Simon made cartoon characters three-dimensional ? Sam Simon comedy is all about character, not just a string of gags. In' The Simpsons,' the characters are motivated by their emotions and their foibles. ' What are they thinking ?' -- that is Sam's contribution. The stories come from the characters.
