We seldom realize, for example, that our most private thoughts and emotions are not actually our own. For we think in terms of languages and images which we did not invent, but which were given to us by our society. We copy emotional reactions from our parents, learning from them that excrement is supposed to have a disgusting smell and that vomiting is supposed to be an unpleasant sensation. The dread of death is also learned from their anxieties about sickness and from their attitudes to funerals and corpses. Our social environment has this power just because we do not exist apart from a society. Society is our extended mind and body. Yet the very society from which the individual is inseparable is using its whole irresistible force to persuade the individual that he is indeed separate! Society as we now know it is therefore playing a game with self-contradictory rules.

Eyal Press writes in The New Yorker. Audm subscribers can listen to that article.)In the rest of today’s newsletter, we look more closely at the 10 states.Furthest alongInitiatives seem most likely to happen soon in two states. In Ohio, a coalition of abortion rights groups is collecting signatures to place an initiative on the ballot this year that would protect access through roughly the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. For now, most abortions remain legal in Ohio, thanks to a court ruling blocking a ban.In South Dakota, organizers are optimistic that they can collect the signatures needed for an initiative next year. It is a compromise measure that would seek to reinstate the minimum access required by the Roe v. Wade decision. All abortions would be legal in the first trimester (roughly 12 weeks), and some would be in the second trimester.Early effortsIn several other states, efforts have begun, but they’re less advanced. In Missouri, advocates have not yet settled on one approach. Some petitions — an early step to putting an initiative on the ballot — would protect most abortion access until 24 weeks of pregnancy. Others would be narrower and let the state enact parental consent laws.In Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a near-total ban, advocates are hoping to place an initiative on the ballot that would allow most abortions until 24 weeks. But the state’s pro-marijuana movement helps highlight the slowness of the effort: Organizers of a 2024 ballot initiative to legalize marijuana have already raised $30 million and collected nearly all the required signatures — while organizers of an abortion initiative are just getting started.Arizona has tough rules for ballot initiatives, requiring hundreds of thousands of signatures on a petition.

This is essentially about what it means to live and work in a country governed by the rule of law. Everyone must play by the same rules, disney was openly and legally granted unique and special privilege – that privilege of running its own government for a time. That era has ended.

If two people object, we are back on the basic rule … which says we have to wait four weeks. But, if we don’t get that many objections, then we can suspend the rules … and we can vote tonight, and my guess is, if we do that, the council will vote to send Rep. Justin Jones right back to the Tennessee State House.

Putting in that pitch clock and the rules around it has been single handedly responsible for shaving off 25 minutes of kind of dead time off a baseball game, i think that’s probably still a positive in the net sense, but at the same time you do lose a little bit of that other stuff.

The larger goal for reformers, though, is to bring the judiciary’s travel and gift rules in line with those of the other two branches, which would mean pre-approval from an ethics body for free trips and a contemporaneous post-travel report that lists who paid, the total cost and who else attended.

If politics decides who can take part in a competition, then sport and athletes become tools of politics, it is then impossible for sport to transfer its uniting powers. We must be politically neutral but not apolitical. We know well that politics rules the world. We know well that our decisions have political implications and we have to include that in our thinking.

The answer is absolutely not, for many reasons. I’ll cite the simplest reason, which is regulatory and statutory. We now own 9.8% of the bank — if we go above 10% all kinds of new rules kick in, whether be it by our regulator or the European regulator or the Swiss regulator, we’re not inclined to get into a new regulatory regime.

If states passed laws that say things like, and many of them are currently contemplating these, ‘ whatever the NCAA rules are in NIL, they do n’t apply in our state, ’ that creates an issue where you put schools and conferences, many of which involve multiple states, in an impossible position, i think John Jones/Icon Sportswire/Getty Images Adidas’s incumbent on us to come up with a proposal that works in the absence of that [ legislation ], but I do think it will be harder to apply John Jones/Icon Sportswire/Getty Images Adidas to all 50 states if states passed laws that put schools in positions where they have to make a call.

During the Obama-Biden administration, we put in place tough requirements on banks like Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, including the Dodd-Frank law, to make sure the crisis we saw in 2008 would not happen again, unfortunately, the last administration rolled back some of these requirements. I’m going to ask Congress and the banking regulators to strengthen the rules for banks to make it less likely this kind of bank failure would happen again.
