William James (1842-1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist who greatly contributed to the development of modern psychology and philosophy. He was one of the leading thinkers of the late nineteenth century and is considered as one of the most influential philosophers the United States has ever produced. His notable works include "Principles of Psychology", "Varieties of Religious Experience", and "Pragmatism". James was also the brother of the noted writer Henry James. He is often referred to as the father of American psychology.

William James was an American philosopher and psychologist who had trained as a physician. He was the first educator to offer a psychology course in the United States. James wrote influential books on pragmatism, psychology, educational psychology, the psychology of religious experience, and mysticism. He was the brother of novelist Henry James and of diarist Alice James. In the summer of 1878, William James married Alice Gibbens.
