Wikipedia

  1. Wagon Train

Wagon Train is an American Western series that aired 8 seasons: first on the NBC television network (1957–1962), and then on ABC (1962–1965). Wagon Train debuted on September 18, 1957, and became number one in the Nielsen ratings. It is the fictional adventure story of a large westbound wagon train through the American Old West, from Missouri to California. Its format attracted different famous guest stars per episode, as travelers or as residents of the settlements they encountered. The show initially starred supporting film actor Ward Bond as the wagon master (replaced after his abrupt death in 1960 by supporting film actor John McIntire) and Robert Horton as the scout (eventually replaced by similar-looking Western television star Robert Fuller when Horton opted to leave the series). The series was inspired by the 1950 film Wagon Master directed by John Ford and starring Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., and Ward Bond, and by the 1930 early widescreen film The Big Trail directed by Raoul Walsh and starring 23-year-old John Wayne in his first leading role as the buckskin-clad scout and featuring Ward Bond in a prominent supporting role. The series influenced the development of Star Trek, pitched as "Wagon Train to the stars" and launched in 1966.

  1. wagon train

A wagon train is a group of covered wagons traveling together, typically in a single file, often for long distances. These were commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries in the U.S. for westward expansion and migration. The wagons were used to carry possessions and provisions, and often families would live in them for the duration of the journey. The train often traveled at a slow pace and was usually led or overseen by a wagon master.

Wikidata

  1. Wagon train

A wagon train is a group of wagons traveling together. In a military context, a baggage train was the wagon train that followed an army with supplies and amunition. In the American West, individuals traveling across the plains in covered wagons banded together for mutual assistance, as is reflected in numerous films and television programs about the region, such as Audie Murphy's Tumbleweed and Ward Bond and John McIntire's Wagon Train series on NBC and later ABC. Although most trains elected a captain and created bylaws, in reality the captain had little authority. His role was largely confined to getting everyone moving in the morning and selecting when and where to camp at night. Although wagon trains are associated with the Old West, the Trekboers of South Africa also traveled in caravans of covered wagons.
