Wikipedia
Vieja
Vieja is a genus of cichlid fish from Central America and Mexico. The majority of the species are freshwater fish found in stagnant or slow-moving waters of southern Mexico to El Salvador, but V. maculicauda, which also occurs in brackish waters, ranges south to Panama. They are high-bodied cichlids that reach lengths of up to 17–35 cm (7–14 in) depending on the exact species. Vieja feed mostly on vegetable matter, but may also take small invertebrates.
Wikidata
Vieja
Vieja is a genus of fish from the family Cichlidae. The geographic distribution of the genus is limited to Central America, primarily Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua. In general Vieja are high bodied cichlids which grow to between 15-35 cm. There are 16 species of Vieja currently described. The classification of several species of Vieja are in dispute, several are sometimes listed as part of the genus Theraps. Further investigation including DNA studies is expected to clarify the taxonomy over the next few years. Vieja is closely related to Paraneetroplus and some authorities, notably FishBase, merge the former into the latter, while placing "V." godmanni and "V." microphthalma in Theraps.
