Unary refers to an operation or function that involves only one operand or input. Unary operations are performed on a single value, variable or data entity. Unaryadjective
Relating to, using, or denoting a system of numerical notation that has 1 rather than 10 as a base. A name for base 1. (Binary is base 2.) Unary, like the early numbers in Roman numerals, uses just the presence of a number of identical characters to indicate the number counted. For example, ten (10) in decimal might be represented by ten letter "I"s - IIIIIIIIII. This isn't practical for Human reading, but on a computer a file, or a line in a file, could contain an appropriate number of characters to indicate the counted number.
The first few Roman numerals might be considered to count in Unary: "I", "II", "III".
Etymology: Mathematical.
