Any of a class of compounds based on NH-CS-NH formally derived from urea by replacing the oxygen atom with sulfur. It finds uses in photography as a fixing agent, in inorganic synthesis, and in medicine as an antithyroid drug.

Thiourea
Thiourea is an organosulfur compound with the formula SC(NH2)2 . It is structurally similar to urea, except that the oxygen atom is replaced by a sulfur atom, but the properties of urea and thiourea differ significantly. Thiourea is a reagent in organic synthesis. "Thioureas" refers to a broad class of compounds with the general structure C=S. Thioureas are related to thioamides, e.g. RCNR2, where R is methyl, ethyl, etc.

Thiourea
A photographic fixative used also in the manufacture of resins. According to the Fourth Annual Report on Carcinogens (NTP 85-002, 1985), this substance may reasonably be anticipated to be a carcinogen (Merck Index, 9th ed). Many of its derivatives are ANTITHYROID AGENTS and/or FREE RADICAL SCAVENGERS.
