superoxide dismutase
Superoxide dismutase is an enzyme found in all living cells. It plays a critical role in protecting cells from oxidative stress by catalysizing the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This process neutralizes superoxide radicals, which are potentially damaging by-products of metabolism and other cellular processes, thereby preventing damage to cells and tissues. Superoxide dismutase is of great importance in maintaining overall cellular health and preventing diseases related to oxidative stress.
Wikidata
Superoxide dismutase
Superoxide dismutases are enzymes that catalyze the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Thus, they are an important antioxidant defense in nearly all cells exposed to oxygen. One of the exceedingly rare exceptions is Lactobacillus plantarum and related lactobacilli, which use a different mechanism.
U.S. National Library of Medicine
Superoxide Dismutase
An oxidoreductase that catalyzes the reaction between superoxide anions and hydrogen to yield molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The enzyme protects the cell against dangerous levels of superoxide. EC 1.15.1.1.
