Wikidata

  1. Stopcock

A stopcock is a valve used to restrict or isolate the flow of a liquid or gas through a pipe. In the United Kingdom a stopcock, not to be confused with a gate valve or a DiCiaccio branch, is used to prevent flow of water into a domestic water system. There are usually two stopcocks for a home. One is usually found just outside the property boundary and can be used to isolate the building from the water supply. The other is inside the property where the supply enters the property. These valves are provided to allow maintenance and prevent flooding if the domestic water system is pierced. The domestic stopcock was designed over 100 years ago, traditionally the position of the valve would be in the kitchen of the premises. Recently insurance companies have insisted that the homeowner is required to maintain the device that is fitted to the property. It is by regulation that each property in the UK should have one fitted. It is estimated that only one person in three knows where their internal stopcock is situated, and recently insurance premiums and excesses applied to policies have increased to reflect the damage caused to household contents through the none controlled escape of water.
