stockjobber
A stockjobber is an individual or firm who buys and sells stocks or shares on a stock exchange for their own account or on behalf of their clients. The term is often associated with 18th and 19th century traders, who made profits by buying shares at a lower price and selling them at a higher price, allowing them to earn a profit from the price difference, a practice known as jobbing. Nowadays the term is rarely used, and such individuals or firms are generally referred to as stock traders or brokers.

Stockjobber
Stockjobbers were institutions that acted as market makers in the London Stock Exchange. Prior to "Big Bang" in 1986, every stock traded on the Exchange passed through a jobber's book, where they acted as intermediaries between stockbrokers, who were in turn not permitted to be market makers. Immediately prior to the Big Bang, the leading jobbing firms were Akroyd & Smithers, Wedd Durlacher, Pinchin Denny, Smith Brothers, Bisgood Bishop and Charles Pulley.
