As a son of a "Steely-Eyed-Missile man, it seems to me that nearly everyone misses the Military connection of the phrase which came by way of Strategic Air Command. My father wore the Missile emblem of the USAF SAC Missileer on his left uniform pocket. I believe the term comes from the men who had to sit in the underground missile silos defending this country and with firm resolve stare the possible end of civilization as we know it in the face and not blink. I heard my father use the term long before it was made popular in the movies and popular culture. NASA was a relative late comer into its usage. Yes it has the connotation of being cool under pressure, but was applied first to the Men in Blue Uniforms and not to a bunch of engineer geeks.
