Wikipedia
Spirometer
A spirometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs. A spirometer measures ventilation, the movement of air into and out of the lungs. The spirogram will identify two different types of abnormal ventilation patterns, obstructive and restrictive. There are various types of spirometers that use a number of different methods for measurement (pressure transducers, ultrasonic, water gauge).

spirometer
A spirometer is a medical device that is used to measure the volume of air inhaled and exhaled by the lungs. It is a common tool used in pulmonary function testing to diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis. The device works by measuring the breath, and the data it collects can help evaluate how well the lungs are functioning.
Webster Dictionary
Spirometernoun
an instrument for measuring the vital capacity of the lungs, or the volume of air which can be expelled from the chest after the deepest possible inspiration. Cf. Pneumatometer
Etymology: [L. spirare to breathe + -meter.]

Spirometer
A spirometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs. It is a precision differential pressure transducer for the measurements of respiration flow rates. The spirometer records the amount of air and the rate of air that is breathed in and out over a specified period A Tank-type spirometer works on the same principle as the gas meter. A canister of soda is usually attached to absorb carbon dioxide and a kymograph trace is produced to record changes in total volume gas. From this, vital capacity, tidal volume, breathing rate and ventilation rate can be calculated. From the overall decline on the graph, the oxygen uptake can also be measured.
