Snakewoodnoun
What we call snakewood is properly the smaller branches of the root of a tall strait tree growing in the island of Timor, and other parts of the East. It has no remarkable smell; but is of an intensely bitter taste. The Indians are of opinion, that it is a certain remedy for the bite of the hooded serpent, and from thence its name of lignum colubrinum, or snakewood. We very seldom use it. John Hill Mat. Med.
Etymology: from snake and wood.

snakewood
Snakewood is a type of medium to large hardwood tree native to South America, especially in Suriname and Guyana. The name is derived from its characteristic grain, which is highly contrasting and reminiscent of a snake's skin. It is known for its extreme density and high oil content. Because of its attractive pattern and hardness, snakewood is often used in the production of luxury items, such as ornamental objects, walking sticks, violin bows, and knife handles. Its scientific name is Brosimum guianense.
